The heroine of our project is Halina Konopacka – a sportswoman, a poet, a painter, the first polish olympic champion and the first woman ever who won atletics competition in the olympics. She did not become famous only for her achievements as a sportswoman but also for faithful patriot: „The sport, which i was doing since my childhood, gave me willpower and physical strenght, which became helpful when the export of a polish gold happened, so that it does not fall into the hands of Germany. My husband got a order to export this gold worth ten milion zloty of Polish National Bank. It was packed in wooden crates with a height of one and a half metres and set on seats of Warsaw buses, which, if I remember well were storey. Those are words, that Konopacka beginned her relation from evacuating Polish National Bank’s gold. Right after the outbreak of Second World War she left everything she knew, and went with her husband, as a driver, to save livestock of many Polish people. We hope that this exhibition will show you how outstanding this woman was. She surely needs to be reminded in the year of the 100th anniversary of Poland’s independence.
